Gemma's Campaign to raise 10k for The Alzheimer's Society

The Roland Mills Memorial Fund

Acumen employee Gemma Markie is running a campaign to raise £10,000 for The Alzheimer’s Society in memory of her Pap who died this year after suffering with the disease.

My Pap died on the 8th February 2010 after suffering with Alzheimer’s disease.  Alzheimer’s is such an awful disease and the symptoms keep getting progressively worse.  Pap suffered with this for four years and the worst part being when my Nan could not cope any longer at home and Pap went to a residential care home.  My family and I visited him every day and Pap was never alone, but there is no cure for this disease and we just watched him getting worse.  The care home was very short staffed, and in my opinion couldn’t cope with the number of patients staying there.  Pap had several falls and in the end was admitted to Northampton General Hospital, where he died with all of his family by his side.

We want to keep fighting for Pap and have decided to run a campaign to raise £10,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society.  Money raised for this charity helps towards research for the disease and helping carers and sufferers.

My Pap was a devoted sportsman and played professional football for Northampton Town.  Pap had a great passion for sport in general and was committed to his local sports teams, so a lot of the events we will be running are based around sport.

Please help us to reach this total by taking part in the fun events we are organising, all listed below.  Any donations will be much appreciated.  You can donate through our just giving page at www.justgiving.co.uk/therolandmillsmemorialfund , charity tins are situated in The Bull at Harpole, or you can contact; Linda Merry – 01604 832263, or Jean Mills – 01604 830553.

The 5-a-side Football Tournament raised £1068.40. I am so grateful to everyone who took part and helped organise it, my pap would have been so proud. Maybe we can make it a yearly event!

The sports quiz raised £386.40. I raised £250 for running the Robin Hood Half Marathon which I finished in 2 Hours and 3 Minutes.
